Booking a full day in a professional recording studio is an exciting milestone for any band. But studios are expensive, and time is precious. To make the most of your budget and get the best possible recordings, you need to prepare properly.
Here is your pre-production checklist for your first band recording session:
1. Practice Until It’s Second Nature
Studio recording is not the time to figure out a new guitar solo or an alternate drum fill. Write your parts, practice them until they are second nature, and play along to a metronome. The studio environment can be intimidating, and muscle memory is your best friend.
2. Change Your Strings and Drum Heads
This is the golden rule of recording. Dull, rusty strings on a guitar will sound lifeless on a recording. Change your guitar strings a few days before the session so they settle into tuning. For drummers, replace your snare and tom heads a few days prior so they are broken in and stay in tune.
3. Have a Reference Track
Bring 3 to 5 songs that you want your recording to sound like. This gives your engineer a clear idea of the sonic direction you want to go in terms of tone, effects, and overall vibe.
4. Communicate Before the Session
Talk to the studio about your setup. How many amps do you need? Does the drummer need extra mics? Do you need a piano? Sending an email with your requirements before you arrive allows the engineer to set up the live room perfectly before you walk in, saving you hours of setup time.
5. Bring Supplies
Studio days can be long. Bring plenty of water, snacks, and a change of clothes. The last thing you want is to lose energy during a crucial vocal take.
At Tim Studio Recording, our live room is equipped to handle any band setup. Our engineers will make sure your session is smooth, efficient, and sounds incredible.
